Description

Thaen Mittai or Honey Sugar Candy is a Kerala special dainty sweet which is popular among kids. Available in tea-stalls, these little titbits melts in your mouth.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup Idli Rice
  • 1/8 cup Urad Dal
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/8 tsp Orange Food color
  • 1/4 tsp Baking powder
  • Oil, for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Soak rice and urad dal for three hours. Do not exceed this time limit.
  2. Grind it to a smooth paste using little water. It should be thick as in the Meduvada batter.
  3. Add food color and mix well.
  4. Add baking powder and mix again.
  5. Keep oil in a pan for deep frying.
  6. Meanwhile, in a pan, add sugar and water and heat. Once the sugar is combined well with water, simmer down to keep the syrup warm.
  7. To the hot oil, drop in a tiny spoonful of batter and fry until crisp on all sides. Fry in batches and add it to the sugar syrup. Let it sit for a couple of minutes.
  8. Once cooled, add it to an airtight glass container and serve as desired.
