    Prawn Biriyani or Shrimp Biriyani, also popularly known as Jheenga Biriyani is one of the easiest biriyanis to prepare.

    Prawn Biriyani

    This recipe doesn't take more than 45 minutes to prepare because shrimps are easy to cook unlike mutton or chicken.

    Ingredients

    Scale
    1. 300 gms Prawns, medium sized
    2. ¼ cup Oil
    3. 10 Shallots, finely sliced
    4. 1 tbsp Ginger paste
    5. 2 tbsp Garlic paste 
    6. 3 Green chilies
    7. 2 Tomatoes, finely chopped
    8. ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
    9. 1 tsp Chili powder
    10. ½ tsp Black pepper powder
    11. Salt, to taste
    12. 1 cup Thick coconut milk
    13. Coriander, finely chopped
    14. 2 tbsp Lemon juice
    15. 3-4 tablespoon Ghee
    16. 2 cups of Rice
    17. 3 Cardamom pods, crushed
    18. 3 Cloves
    19. 3 cups of Water

    Instructions

    1. Wash and soak rice for about 20-30 minutes.
    2. Heat oil in a large pan.
    3. Add shallots and sauté till light brown.
    4. Add ginger and garlic paste, green chilies, and chopped tomatoes. Stir fry for a couple of minutes.
    5. Add turmeric, chili, and pepper powder and sauté till oil leaves the sides of the pan.
    6. Add prawns and cook for 5 minutes. Add salt and check for seasoning.
    7. Pour coconut milk and mix well.
    8. Sprinkle chopped fresh coriander and lemon juice and cook over low heat for 5 to 7 mins.
    9. Remove from heat.
    10. Heat ghee in a  pressure cooker and cardamom and cloves.
    11. Add rice and mix gently.
    12. Add in the cooked prawns curry along with water into the pressure cooker. Close and pressure cook till a whistle is blown.
    13. Once the pressure is released, garnish with fried onions, nuts, and mint leaves. Serve hot with a raita of your choice.

      I am hoping to cook this biriyani tomorrow. Could you clarify if the '4 cups rice' is a typo maybe? Seems a lot for 250-300 gms prawn?

      I tried this out last night but didn't pressure cook the rice, just boiled it and it was a hit...such a big hit in fact that before I thought of taking a picture to show you, the dish was clean! Yum recipe...have bookmarked it now! 🙂

      The way my mom makes it in Kannur, the prawns have a darker tinge. I assume thats just a matter of frying it a bit more, rather than an alteration of the masala. Still, prawns are my all time favourite so you can imagine how my eyes are staring at that pic with my tummy growling 😀
