Which is your favorite South Indian Breakfast? Idli? Dosa? I say, Idiyappam. It’s my absolute favourite and each time my Mom makes this, it melts my heart.  But two years into the wedding, I have tried making this only twice. Such hardwork, I tell you! But worth it- Totally. I have served this with the Fish Molee (coming up soon). Perfect combo that made P and I exclaim, “Wow, wow” every time we took a bite. I know, I’m good.. 😛

idiyappam

Ingredients:

Roasted rice flour – 2 cups, Boiling water – 1½ to 1 3/4cups , Grated Coconut– 2 cups and Salt

Method:

Mix salt and roasted rice flour. Add boiling water little by little and mix the dough. Knead until you get a smooth and soft dough. It sh20140407_133545ould neither be too tight nor should it be sticky..

Now, grease the idli moulds with oil. It helps in taking out the idiyappams smoothly. Sprinkle grated coconut on the moulds. Put the dough into the Idiyappam presser and press each portion through the it onto the greased idli moulds (as int he picture).

Boil water in the steamer and place the idli moulds and steam for ten mins on medium to high flame. Keep it closed for a min or two. Remove and serve hot with any curry of your choice. It goes well with Fish molee, Kadala Curry(coming soon), green peas masala, Vegetable stew, Egg in Coconut milk gravy or Chicken stew.

P.S: Excuse for the not-so appealing pic, will change soon 🙂

I’ve had this dish a couple of times at a Mallu friend’s place and absolutely loved it. Sounds like a lot of hard work to make it though. I’ll keep it on agenda for the times I visit my friend’s place 😉

This post brought back so many memories from my childhood. We used to eat this one with coconut chutney and also a sweet and tangy curry. I personally have never made it as I did not find a similar kind of press here in US. Now I am craving some. 😛

Yummy yummy idiyappam. I love them. The first time I had them was at my grandad’s place in Singapore. He would buy them for breakfast with coconut and sugar. So yummy.
