This homemade dog birthday cake is packed with all the good stuff - peanut butter, carrots, and honey - everything that your pupper craves!
Happy 2nd birthday to my Golden Boy, Mufasa!
One of the most important days of the year just passed for me: my Golden Retriever had his 2nd barkday! We consider him the blessing in our lives and I wanted to do everything to make his special day even more exciting. Mufasa (popularly known in our circle as Muffy) is my best companion, the best listener in distressful days, always watching me do the craziest of things and showering me with unconditional love without judgment.
He is one happy dog who is always by my side, no matter what! He is my dance partner and a complete foodie, just like me! Check out his Instagram here.
There are many pet stores available in the country that provides pet-friendly treats. We also have pet bakeries in cities but living atop a hill, these weren't viable options. Muffy lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. So, it was only imperative that I bake a birthday cake for him. However, there was one issue- I don't have a baking gene in my body. I scoot when it comes to operating an oven. No, I'm not kidding. But that's for another day. Nevertheless, I did brave my fears and baked this healthy cake for him.
🐾 Can Dogs have Wheat?
Wheat is used in dog treats and foods and there is no reason why a healthy dog shouldn't consume wheat. However, like other foods, if you are introducing wheat for the first time, give in limited quantities and check for allergy or intolerance.
That said, flour (All Purpose Flour/Maida) should be avoided. Many dog treats contain flour and that's why they are treats and not proper food. Dogs may eat baked goods with flour in limited quantities though.
🐾 How to Bake a Layered Dog Cake
This dog cake is packed with the goodness of peanut butter, honey, and carrots - all that your dog loves. It is made with wheat flour and a touch of all purpose flour to make it wholesome. Whip up all in ingredients in a bowl and bake just like a regular cake. The result is a healthy, spongy cake!
In a bowl, I whisked together wheat flour, flour, unsalted/unsweetened peanut butter, freshly grated carrot, honey, egg, and oil. The batter was poured into an 8" cake pan and was baked in a preheated oven at 1800. I use the Pintola Natural Peanut butter for this recipe(not sponsored).
🐾 How to Store
Do not serve the entire cake to your doggo. Give in moderation and the leftovers can be refrigerated in airtight containers for up to three days. Defrost at room temperature until soft before you serve again.
🐾 Dog Birthday Cake Frosting
This could be one of the easiest frostings there would ever be. Whip together a little peanut butter and yogurt. That's it!

Dog Birthday Cake Recipe
PrintHomemade Dog Birthday Cake
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 8 1x
Description
A layered spongy cake for your dog's birthday- filled with the goodness of peanut butter, carrots, and honey, and frosted with "fluffy buttercream."
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup grated carrot
- 1 egg
- ⅛ cup flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ cup natural peanut butter (Unsalted, Unsweetened)
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- ⅓ cup honey
Frosting:
- ¼ cup peanut butter
- ½ yogurt/hung curd
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees C or 350 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch cake pan.
- Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Pour the batter into the greased pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
- Insert a toothpick/fork at the center of the cake and check if it comes clean. If so, the cake is cooked.
- Let the cake rest for five minutes and remove the cake to a wired rack. Let it cool.
Frosting:
- Whip together peanut butter and yogurt.
Notes
The recipe makes one 8" cake. The recipe can easily be doubled. I made two cakes and spread the frosting between layers and over the cake.
To one of the cakes, I also added ¼ cup finely cubed chicken pieces. So, go wild!
